An important aspect of towbar fitting is the wiring which is required to power either your trailer lights or caravan internal electrics. This is often overlooked when booking a towbar or can be difficult to understand exactly what your vehicle requires if you have none or very little knowledge.
Basic wiring to the sockets and plugs is a rather straightforward procedure, however when you require audible replays and bypass kits to cope with the complicated cars of today, this is when things can start to get tricky. Luckily for you, we do this day in day out. All towbar electrics we supply have a great reputation for quality and durability. Single 7 pin electrics, also known as 12N towing electrics are needed to power the lighting on a trailer, caravan, cycle carrier or anything you're towing. The single 7 pin electrics power left and right indicator and taillights, fog lights and brake lights. If you don't require any further power to your towing counterpart, the single 7 pin electrics socket will be your main choice.
Twin electrics is a 2 plug system which combines the single 7 pin 12N electrics socket with a 12S electrics socket. You will need twin electrics if you require more power than what a single 7 pin socket can provide on a pre manufactured UK caravan post UK caravans are fitted with 13 pin connectors.
The twin electrics will power everything that a single electrics system powers plus reversing lamp, battery, power supply and fridge. The brown pin 5 in most cases is not used when wiring tow bar electrics and it is important to ensure that the white pin 3 cable is earthed. In some cases a split charge relay might be needed in order for the power to switch divide from charging a leisure battery and the car battery. This is essentially a 2-in-1 socket, it has all the capabilities as twin electrics in one rather than 2 separate sockets.
Conversion leads are available for 13 pin towing electrics to twin 7 pin towing electrics or twin 7 pin to 13 pin towing electrics if your vehicle has a 13 pin socket and your caravan has twin 7 pin towing plugs or vice versa. If you are unsure how to use your multimeter, have a quick read through the instructions supplied with your multimeter.
One of the first things is safety. As you are working close to the rear of the vehicle, make sure the hand brake is on. As the 13 Pin socket has a flap covering it, it is easier if you can find some way for holding the flap open. I use a length of string looped over the rear wiper arm and down to the socket flap.
You need to find a suitable earth point on the vehicle to connect the negative black lead of your multimeter to. In our example below, we have a reading of We now check all the sockets connections individually using the positive red test lead. Only one — Pin 9 leisure battery charging circuit should have a voltage present on it…. As you are working at the back of the vehicle you will be close to the engine exhaust. Always be aware of exhaust fumes.
Again, check that the hand brake is applied. In our example now it is Returning to the socket once again, connect the negative black test lead up to the earth point on the vehicle and go through each pin again. This time Pin 9 should show a voltage as well as should Pin 10 Fridge circuit We have now checked that with the engine running, no other circuits should be operating except pins 9 and NOTE: On modern cars, especially ones fitted with factory towing electrics, the vehicles Electronic Control Unit ECU might delay the turning on of the fridge circuit until it detects that enough charge has been put back into the vehicle battery after starting the engine.
Now we need to check the neutral earth return path for each of the circuits. Within the caravan these three circuits are separate, including the neutral earth return path, the only time these three neutrals earths come together is at an earth point in the vehicle. To check it is working, touch the two test leads of the multi-meter together, you should get a reading of With your multimeter negative test lead connected to the earth point on the car, test each of the three earth connection in the socket… below.
What we are looking for here is the lowest reading. In our example we have a reading of 0. It is possible to get a reading of 0, but it is more likely to be just above. If it reads 0. If the reading is still high, you need to find the earth terminal in the vehicle for the cable that you are testing and give it a clean.
It might mean undoing a nut and using some fine emery cloth to remove any dirt from each terminal and possibly rust around the base of the terminal post.
With the test above completed, we are now confident we have good earth connections and the leisure battery charging circuit and fridge circuit are operating correctly.What you need to know when considering fitting a pin plug to your caravan and tow vehicle.
A bad electrical connection between car and caravan can make for a disastrous trip.
You may also have an Anderson plug. An Anderson plug is usually the plug used on a charge circuit as it connects large cables from the car battery to the caravan battery.
One of the main reasons for using an Anderson plug is to reduce voltage drop. Running a fridge and charging the battery while towing requires the maximum voltage to operate correctly. An Anderson plug, fitted with the correct diameter cable, is the best way to solve this problem. For those who have a need for multiple Anderson plugs, the good news is they come in a range of sizes, and colours. Each size has a different amp rating and each different colour suitable to plugs of only that colour.
The most popular Anderson plug size is the 50A plug. A pin plug is sometimes an alternative to an Anderson plug if the caravanner wants just one electrical connection between car and van.
However, there is an important downside. The pin plug can only take a 6mm-diameter wire, so it will not provide the charge of an Anderson plug system. He recommends having an Anderson plug installed whenever you are using a charge circuit. He reckons Anderson plugs are particularly suitable on any charge circuit and when caravanners want to use dual battery systems.

Many major manufactures have been fitting reverse lights and 13 pin plugs on O2 trailers for a few months before this date. Don't worry, you can get an adapter. When connecting up a new socket or plug ensure that the wires are in good condition. Often, over time, moisture will get in the plugs and sockets and cause corrosion on the wires. These can cause poor connections resulting in the connected devices not working at all or not how you would expect. We recommend these standards because they are pretty universal. That said, for specific situations, there are industrial standards with different connectors and wire arrangements.
The most common 4 wire connector is the 4-Pin Flat Connector as shown here. The 4-Pin connector only has the first 4 items listed.
The rest you can ignore. Trailers with capacity over Total Gross Trailer Weight should have brakes. If a trailer has brakes, then it needs a connector with at least 5 pins. The 5th pin, a blue wire, gives power to operate or disable the trailer brakes.
If your truck has a built-in 7-pin socket, but you only need 5 of the pins. Use the 7-pin connector anyway see belowand just leave out the last 2 wires. The 5-Pin flat connector above is nice for easy handling, but if your vehicle already has a 7-pin, just use it. For trailers that have a little more going on electrically, we recommend 7-pin connectors. This is the style we recommend. Other styles exist — though the pin-outs are often different. Several industrial styles are similar and definately use different pins.
